We set up camp in a perfect campsite about 25mins from town called Hecla Junction, campsite 13. It was located in a canyon, along side the Arkansas river and old railroad tracks of the past.
Eager to get out of the car and do some real hiking. Eric chose the route, which was a little extreme to say the least. The path that was both steep, full of loose gravel and littered with rocks and cacti. After the 2 hour trek, nearly peeing my pants scared to death the roots I was hanging on to would give way to a good 400ft canyon drop-off, we got back to the car, exhausted, and began to set up camp. Mere and I worked on the tent and organized dinner, while Eric started a fire with some flint. (He learned it from all those Bear Grylls shows ;-) and completed this task with his handy Gerber knife). Very impressive!
Eric & I played the guitar and Mere joined in for singing. (Songs: Baby I am Yours-Arctic Monkeys and Wagon Wheel-Old Crows Medicine Show). By 9pm we were all poop-tired and began to unwind, crawling into our new tent, reading books by headlamp. Tomorrow we are off for white water rafting on the Arkansas.
